Y, or y, is the twenty-fifth and penultimate letter of the Latin alphabet, used in the modern English alphabet, the alphabets of other western European languages and others worldwide. According to some authorities, it is the sixth (or seventh if including W) vowel letter of the English alphabet. Its name in English is ''wye'' (pronounced ), plural ''wyes''. In the English writing system, it mostly represents a vowel and seldom a consonant, and in other orthographies it may represent a vowel or a consonant. The Latin script, also known as the Roman script, is a writing system based on the letters of the classical Latin alphabet, derived from a form of the Greek alphabet which was in use in the ancient Greek city of Cumae in Magna Graecia. The Greek alphabet was altered by the Etruscan civilization, Etruscans, and subsequently their alphabet was altered by the Ancient Romans. Several Latin-script alphabets exist, which differ in graphemes, collation and phonetic values from the classical Latin alphabet. Ly (digraph)
Ly is a digraph of the Latin alphabet, used in Hungarian. Usage ''Ly'' is the twentieth letter of the Hungarian alphabet. Its Hungarian name is ''elipszilon'' . Now, it can represent the same phoneme (palatal approximant) as the Hungarian letter ''j'', but historically, it represented the different phoneme ( palatal lateral approximant). It is used this way only in Hungarian. In Hungarian, even if two characters are put together to make a different sound, they are considered one letter, and even acronyms keep the letter intact. The combination ''lj'' (considered two separate letters, L and J) is also common in Hungarian and is even pronounced by many speakers.
